Saturday Auntie Nelly was invited to a kitchen party for her neice and I was invited to come along.

A Zambian kitchen party is like a Canadian bridal shower; it happens before the wedding and people bring gifts. In Zambia, after your kitchen party you will have everything you need for a full kitchen and more as you start your married life together. Dishes, cutlery, glasses, a punch bowl, a toaster, pots and pans, a stove, a freezer, a fridge, a fan, a china cabinet, a vegetable rack; you name it, it is probably there. This is not a little event with only 10 – 20 of your closest friends and family. Everyone, all your family (of which there are many), friends and people from church attend so there will be at least two hundred people there wishing you well. And, because this is Africa there will be singing and dancing.

Here comes the bride (she is under the chitenge with her Aunt (her father’s sister) and a close family friend (her mom’s friend who is married with a good family home and has an excellent reputation)).

And here comes the groom (he is in the crowd of people rushing to witness the unveiling of his bride).

Greeting each other after exchanging gifts:
