more notes about Zambia

Everyone is related (even if they aren’t actually related, if you’ve known them for a long time that counts as being related).

If you see your friend on the side of the road, you pull over to say hello to visit. If you want to visit your friend for coffee, tea, dinner, whatever, just drop by (even if you want to stay for the night and bring your entire family. . .you can call just before you pull into the driveway). The hospitality and sense of community is incredible!

Never say “oh, you’re such a monkey,” “stop monkeying around” or make any reference to monkeys (or pretty much any animal) to any person as it is a HUGE insult.

If you want to make school boys giggle like school girls say the word “sushi.” Turns out that sushi in Bemba means fart and the boys think it is the funniest thing if you say it.

  1. it's a little like teaching kids in French immersion about seals... "phoque" is HILARIOUS!
