planting seeds

Today we planted a garden behind the school at Elim Grace in Chipulukusu. I purchased seeds through Seed Programs Inc. an organization that provides seeds to help fight hunger.

The kids helped clear the garden of garbage and prepare the rows for planting the seeds. We collected bags and bags of garbage and even found things like shoes and a pair of jeans in our garden rows!

We planted, mustard, onions, tomatoes, okra, cabbage, Chinese cabbage, and watermelon.  It was a great opportunity for the older kids to practice their English as they read the instructions on the seed packages, and use their rulers while practicing their math skills.

As you can see, it really was a community effort and the kids had a great time.
