road trip and big cities

So this weekend Philip and I took a little road trip to the biggest city in Zambia. Lusaka is only about 300 kms away, but it takes an average of five hours to get there as you have to stop at police check points in every town along the way. And we were stopped by the police a number of times as they were convinced that Philip was a taxi driver and I was his illegal fare.

Yep, that's right, we drove with a rose. Except it was so stinking hot that the rose quickly withered, but it was nice for a short while.

Weekends are a great time to visit Lusaka, but which day depends on what you would like to do.  If you want to visit the market, most shops are closed on Sundays so you will not be able to buy very many things, so then a Saturday would be best.  However, if you want to check out the craft fair, then you have to go on a Sunday.

The market is similar to Masala here in Ndola except instead of being open-air, most of the shops are in buildings.

The craft market is at the Arcade Shopping Mall and is totally worth checking out!  They have wood carvings, paintings, jewllery, clothes, furniture, plants and many other things.

Of course a good portion of the road trip revolves around food.  Obviously, food and I are friends.

I had to introduce Philip to Kinder Eggs. . .except they have changed them. . .what the heck happened to cracking open the egg and prying the small plastic container apart to get the toy? Lame. The original Kinder Eggs were way better.

The Kinder Egg toy.

And a Chocolate Log because secretly I am a 13 year old boy and it made me giggle.

Seriously amazing Thai noodles.
So good.

Celebratory pizza at the end of a perfect day.
