blood slides

Malaria is very common here.

If you have flu-like symptoms (achy body, joint pain and a headache) the best course of action is not to take an advil and rest, but first go to the clinic for a blood slide. (I have been told that if you take any pain medication and then go for a slide it can mask the malaria in your blood so the test will be negative for malaria even though you might have it.)

The process is actually very quick and fairly painless. You get a prick on your thumb, the blood is smeared on a slide and then the lab tech looks at the slide under a microscope and in a few minutes you know if you have malaria or just the flu.
Easy peasy.

And the verdict:
CRAP. I have malaria.
